Dun on Black
E_ aa Dn_ = grulla (aka black dun)
A black horse with a dun gene is commonly called a grulla*. In this dilution, the gene acts on the
black body of
the horse to make it a mousy, or dove-gray color. The points remain black, and the dorsal
stripe, leg barring, and any other dun markings also remain black.
*About the term grulla: it's the
Spanish word for crane, the color of which is similar to these
horses. For that reason, this web site will use it as it
stands, "grulla", rather than change the ending to grullo for a
male. As a precedent, think of a palomino mare... it's not
called a palomina; and so forth.
This webmaster has received many pictures of grulla horses
through the years, some DNA color tested. If the right
photographer is not found for the whole web site, I'll begin adding
those, and perhaps requesting specific others. Thanks!
